Diabetic Retinopathy Screening - 2018

The Foundation for Supporting the Development of Ophthalmology has undertaken a pilot screening project for diabetics in Poland. The project "Diabetic Retinopathy Screening". involved examining diabetics during a visit to a diabetologist, without the involvement of an ophthalmologist - fundus photos were analysed by artificial intelligence. The project was co-financed by the City of Poznań.

The Foundation trained the nursing staff of the diabetes clinic in the use of the funduscamera (a camera for taking fundus images). It turned out that a few hours' training in the use of the camera and the software using artificial intelligence was enough to ensure that every patient received an additional examination for RBD in the diabetologist's office.

The innovation of the examination lies in the use of AI (artificial intelligence) to analyse the patient's fundus photos taken with a special camera (funduscamera) by trained nursing staff. The entire examination takes a few minutes and the patient receives the result on the spot, along with recommendations for further follow-up appointments with their ophthalmologist. The use of the IDx-DR software reduces the examination time from 15 minutes to 5 minutes and does not require the presence of an ophthalmologist - the patient's fundus photos and their uploading to a server for analysis can be performed by appropriately trained nursing staff, on the occasion of a follow-up visit to the diabetic practice.

They screened 544 diabetic patients for early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy - a diabetic complication that can lead to complete loss of vision.
